The Birth of an Idea

Back in January 2017, as masters students of design we wanted to collaborate on an academic project with students from other disciplines from the colleges in our city, specifical people near us who studied things other than design. Surprisingly it was very difficult to find such people, we knew that they existed, but we just didn't have a way to connect with them. When we look back this was probably the time when the seeds of Lernr were sown.

For the three of us, it was the result of a realization; the breadth of what we learned or what we knew was strictly limited to the institutions we'd enrolled in and our immediate social groups. Right from primary education to our postgraduate courses at the National Institute of Design, India, we always had to learn at some school, coaching center or institution of some kind. We couldn't remember the last time we'd learned something from someone outside our immediate friend circle, without paying for it. But there were skilled and knowledgeable people all around us; real people we had no way of connecting to. It was this epiphany that made us decide to start Lernr.

Lernr provides free and fun personalized learning experiences just around the corner. Meet interesting people nearby & learn from them. You can learn anything from Guitar lessons to coding in Java. The only payment you make is by sharing your own skills with the ever-growing community of lernrs.

Lernr gets you customized and curated learning content. Tailor-made sessions, from interesting people near you, responding to your custom requests or offers, give an opportunity for one on one personal interactions and learning. All this, for free! What's even better, is that you'll surely make a friend or two.

Preparing a Concept

Validating a hypothesis through research

With this brief we set out to further conduct a research study in order to validate some of the questions posed above and get data about the behavioral patterns and attitudes associated with learning habits and preferences of people in the age group of 16-35 (covering the spectrum of our initial target audience of college freshers to young working professionals.

What research methodologies did we use?

Research Synthesis

1) Young adults do nothave avenues for one-off skill acquisition needs which arise on a day to day basis, but these needs are not significant enough to warrant extended tuition (time and resource commitment)


Target primary users want to learn new skills(academic/non-academic) to assist with work or simply to have an enriching lifestyle. They also want to share their own skillset with peers.



2)Local businesses have no efficient means to reach out to their target localized customer base on virtual platforms for effective visibility.


Businesses and smaller localized chains do not have a proper medium to be able to advertise on their customer's smart devices. Free social media offers only a vaguely curated group of people, in terms of likes or appreciation, but doesn’t drive local target customers to their businesses.



3) User data-based insights are speculative. There is no definite validation of actionable user interest in a particular content.


Data-hungry businesses have to rely on speculative datasets generated by companies like facebook and google, by tracking the click-through or page views of users. While this might be a sign of interest, there is no surety that it is. Validation is not available and the accuracy of the insights generated through mining such data is inconsistent.

1)Lernris a platform to discover and engage with peers in your vicinity who want to teach or learn useful and interesting skills.




Lernr’sinteractive platform lets users request and claim lessons to learn and teach in the area. It is a quick fix exchange not requiring an extended time commitment. Users exchange credits for lessons, they earn when they teach and spend when they learn. Lernrprovides a customized one on one learning experience with personal connections.



2)Lernrprovides an opportunity for local businesses to become visible through associated promotion to their localized target audiences on virtual platforms.




Lernr suggests local eateries and hangouts to its users for possible venues to conduct “lessons” or exchange sessions, near their location. This drives a lot of customers to these businesses which now have virtual or social media means to target their local audiences.



3) The learning interests and choices of the users are an adenfinitevalidated sign of interest in a particular field and lernr generates this data.



User interest data on Lernris validated, as the user commits to the lesson related to that interest, pays for it in credits and spends time learning it, or teaching it. This validated data can be progressively analyzed and mined for trends and insights.
